What format is suitable for each image

FormatCompressionTransparencyWhen to use it
JPGwith lossNoPhotos and backgrounds without transparency.
PNGNo lossYesLogos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.
WebPWith or without lossYesModern website: good weight with good quality.

QA only affects JPG and WebP. In PNG the browser re-encodes lossless and the slider does not change the result, although it can remove metadata.

When the weight loses and when it doesn't

A camera photo is often greatly reduced with JPG or WebP. Instead, an already optimized PNG or a small image can weigh the same or more when re-encoded. This tool shows the original size, the final size and the actual percentage, also when the result is negative.

Privacy, memory and limits

The image is loaded with a temporary URL from the browser itself and drawn in a <canvas> local. There are no upload requests or external services. When removing the image or change the file, the temporary URLs and the canvas are released. The limit is 25 MB per file, 16,384 px per side and 64 megapixels; On mobile phones with little memory it is convenient use smaller images.

Browser Compatibility

Works on current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and mobile browsers with 2D canvas. JPG and PNG are encoded in all of them; WebP depends on browser support and page disables the option when it is not available. The background color for JPG also prevents the transparent areas appear black.

No. If the file was already well compressed, re-encoding it may increase it. The phrase "Compress" describes the attempt to reduce weight, not a mathematical guarantee. That's why We show the actual result before you download.

Do I lose quality when compressing?

JPG and WebP use lossy compression: the lower the quality, the more artifacts and less detail. PNG is lossless. For photos, a quality of 75–85% is usually a good balance; for text and screenshots, try PNG or WebP.

What if the image is transparent and I choose JPG?

A notice is displayed and you can choose the background color. The resulting JPG will not have transparency. If you need it, choose PNG or WebP.
